Unlock the Unlock Anxiety

UNLOCK ANXIETY

The second wave is finally tiding over and after days and weeks of being stuck indoors, we are breathing a sigh of relief. Even so, many people are still feeling a lingering anxiety, restlessness and apprehension.

It is okay to feel worried. Begin by trying to place your source of anxiety.

Worried about getting ill: It is completely okay to worry about your health and it will guide you to engaging in safe and responsible behaviors. However, keep a check on when the health anxiety is out of proportion and disrupting your peace of mind.

Body image worries: Gained some weight during the lockdown? Enjoyed indoors in your pajamas? It is okay to be concerned about your weight or health. Instead of worrying and spending more time indoors due to body image issues, make a plan to work on it.

Feeling pressured to socialize: You may feel you are not ready to be the life of the party yet. It is okay to wait. Continue virtual connections. Meet for short duration at safe locations with social distancing and pandemic appropriate behaviors.

Work woes: You may not be ready to quit the cozy comfy atmosphere of home office. It could be travel anxiety or worry about mingling at the office in closed quarters.

Tips to reduce unlock anxiety:

Ask yourself why? : Quite often, we let this unpleasant nagging anxious feeling loom on without bothering to address it. Be mindful of your thoughts and pay attention to the source of anxiety. It will help to eventually deal with it.

Make a schedule: The fear of getting back to the routine and drudgery can make us restless. Make your schedule and stay on top of the anxiety. You will get the sense of being in control of your day.

Avoid the “what if” questions and imagining worst possible scenarios: 90% of what we worry about, never happens. Be aware of your mind imagining the worst case scenarios and hypothetical catastrophes. Instead, when such a thought comes, gently remind yourself what can you do about it and focus on that.

Take adequate safety measures and focus on staying healthy: Your anxiety is your mind telling you COVID is still around, so that you don’t let your guard down completely. So pay attention to your health and engage in exercise. Have a balanced diet and practice safety measures when you step out.

Help is always available, ask for it: If you feel your anxiety is overwhelming, talk to friends, family and your friendly neighborhood ‘therapist’.
